SANDY CREEK, NY—An Oswego County man attacked State Police Troopers with a machete Sunday as they investigated a domestic dispute, troopers said.
One trooper sustained a significant cut on a finger and will likely need surgery. Another was cut on the wrist, quad and suffered two broken ribs, according to a state police news release.
The suspect, Neil Jones, 56, was taken into custody at the scene, troopers said. He has been charged with:
- Two counts of first-degree assault
- Assault on a police officer
- Three counts of menacing
- Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Resisting arrest
- Second-degree harassment
- Criminal obstruction of breathing
Troopers were called to the scene around 7:27 a.m. Sunday for a reported domestic dispute on State Route 3 in the Town of Sandy Creek, the release said.
Jones owns a home at 8442 Rt. 3, according to Oswego County property records.
Troopers attempted to take Jones into custody, but he grabbed a machete and fought back, the release said.
Both troopers are expected to recover, the release said. They were both transported to Upstate University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Jones was also evaluated for injuries, troopers said.
Jones is being held on $500,000 cash bail, $1,000,000 bond or $5,000,000 partially secured bond, troopers said. He is scheduled to return to court May 21.
