Watch NYPD Detective Confront Machete‑Wielding Man on Subway Platform after Attacks

The NYPD released body camera footage Friday of a confrontation last month with a machete-wielding man who called himself Lucifer and slashed three elderly commuters at Grand Central Terminal. 

NYPD transit detectives shot a 44-year-old man, identified as Anthony Griffin, during a clash shortly after 9:30 a.m. April 11 on a subway platform inside Grand Central Station, the New York Daily News reports. Griffin, a battle rapper known as Fox5, was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

Griffin allegedly slashed an 84-year-old man in the head before attacking a 70-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, who suffered an open skull fracture. In the footage, Det. Ryan Giuffre is alerted by a bystander to Griffin's rampage, and he is seen trying to convince Griffin to drop his machete.

"Nobody wants to shoot you," Giuffre tells Griffin. 

Calling himself Lucifer, Griffin shouted to officers to shoot him. The footage shows Griffin lunging at Det. Anthony Manetta, who avoided Griffin by moving behind a column.

“We’re going to get you help,” Giuffre pleaded to Griffin. “We’re going to get you help. Stop!”

When Griffin advanced at Giuffre, the detective opened fire. Griffin was struck twice by the gunfire, and the detectives performed CPR on him before he was taken to the hospital.

The transit detectives had been working overtime when the shooting happened. The shooting is under investigation.
