The Pennsylvania State Police on Tuesday announced that it is making its college requirement more flexible for applicants.

Prospective recruits can now submit an application without having obtained the required associate's degree or 60 semester hours of college credit, according to a news release.

Officials said that the policy change allows applicants to continue their education while moving through the hiring process at the same time.

Previously, recruits were required to possess all the required credits prior to submitting their application. Under the new policy, an associate's degree or 60 semester hours of college credit must be obtained prior to joining a cadet class.

"This change gives applicants greater flexibility when planning for their career with the Pennsylvania State Police," Commissioner Tyree C. Blocker said in a statement. "The change, while not lowering standards, allows individuals to continue their education while in the application process."
