Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Dies After Suffering Heart Attack During Training

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Daniel Hinton went into cardiac arrest Tuesday during a training exercise and was transported to Gulf Goast Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper died after suffering a heart attack during training Tuesday.

Sgt. Daniel Hinton went into cardiac arrest during a training exercise and was transported to Gulf Goast Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to a news release.

"The entire Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles family mourns today for the loss of one of our own, FHP Mast Sergeant Daniel Hinton," FLHSMV Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes and Florida Highway Patrol Colonel Gene Spaulding said in a joint statement.

"Master Sgt. Hinton was an extraordinary individual, who put his life on the line to protect and serve others. His life and 32-year career are nothing short of heroic. We ask that you keep his wife and family in your prayers."

Hinton served 32 years with the Florida Highway Patrol. After his graduation from the 77th Recruit Class, his first duty assignment was in Troop F, Ft. Myers and throughout his career, he served at the FHP Training Academy and with the Criminal Interdiction Unit. Most recently he served with the Office of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement in Troop J, Ft. Myers.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
