MADISON COUNTY, Tennessee -- A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was killed in a crash while responding to a car fire Monday afternoon.

Trooper Matthew Gatti was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 when he lost control of his vehicle and it spun out of control before striking two tractor trailers, according to The Jackson Sun.

The 24-year-old trooper who was set to mark his 1-year anniversary with the agency in June was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Matt's life with us on earth has ended, but his legacy is going to live on," his father, Chris Gatti said at a press conference Monday night. "His affecting people and changing their lives is going to outlive him, because that's all he was about."

Before serving with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Gatti worked at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex under Sheriff John Mehr.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
