Requirements/Overview

DUTY DESCRIPTION: Operates the jails electronic security system using a control console allowing movement in and out of the jail as well as within the jail; performs related duties as required. Position is located in the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Jail and Court Services Bureau.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors and operates the audio-visual electronic control console;
  • Visually monitors movement within the jail facility and the perimeter;
  • Acts as the Incident Command Center during emergencies;
  • Monitors inmate telephone calls as needed;
  • Operates the closed circuit TV (CCTV) system;
  • Logs information relating to radio and key assignments and maintenance requests; and
  • Reports existing and potential safety hazards and security threats, disturbances, and irregularities to the shift supervisor.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Previous security experience preferred;
  • Knowledge of security practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use a personal computer;
  • Ability to operate audio-visual electronic control console for long periods of time;
  • Ability to 'read' people and/or potential adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy;
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively with fellow employees and others in sometimes stressful situations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to follow written or verbal instructions;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of data; and
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position without a direct threat to the health or safety of the incumbent or others.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work all shifts covering 24-hours a day including day, swing, grave, weekend and holiday shifts, shifts change every six months;
  • Must appear before an oral board and complete a polygraph and background check prior to entrance on duty.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed primarily in a correctional facility and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions; May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.;
  • The work requires sufficient 'eye-hand' coordination to operate the control console while viewing people moving through door openings, etc.

    Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks;

  • Preference in appointment will be given to eligible veterans.
