HARRIS COUNTY --
Two arrests have been made in the slaying of an off-duty Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable, sources told Local 2 Investigates Tuesday.
A man and woman were under arrest with charges pending, according to sources who were briefed on the investigation.
Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable Ronnie Earl Brewer, 47, was found shot to death in his personal car on a secluded road near Laura Koppe and the Eastex Freeway around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Sources familiar with the case told Local 2 Investigates that robbery appeared to be the motive. Those sources said a woman apparently lured Brewer to the secluded spot, where a man was waiting to rob him.
Both were arrested as HPD Homicide investigators tracked down leads in the area after the killing.
It was unclear whether the two suspects were aware he was a law enforcement officer. He was not wearing a uniform and he was killed inside his personal vehicle.
Precinct 4 constable's office leaders said Brewer joined the department in November 2003, patrolling the night shift on Harris County Toll Roads as well as working neighborhood patrols in Atascocita and the Hunters Glen water district areas. Prior to joining the constable's office, Brewer worked at the Harris County Sheriff's Office from February 1998 through March 2002.
His colleagues said Tuesday was his day off, with his last day on the job being April 9.
"We're as traumatized as his family," Precinct 4 Chief Deputy Jim Sumner said.
In a written statement, Sumner wrote: "He will always be remembered for his diligent work ethic, calm demeanor and great smile."
Brewer's parents, who live near the spot where he was killed, were notified of his death Tuesday morning.
