S.C. Deputy Shot, Killed

A Laurens County deputy was fatally shot and the suspected gunman was wounded and in custody Wednesday night, according to The Sun News.

Deputy Roger Rice was shot during a homicide investigation at a home in Clinton shortly after 11:30 p.m.

Bennie Ray Brown, Jr. opened fire, hitting the deputy and another person inside the home, Sheriff Ricky Chastain told the newspaper.

Deputies returned fire, wounding Brown.

Rice was transported to a Laurens County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Brown was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The other wounded person's injuries were not considered serious.

Rice leaves behind his wife and two young children.

"We have pain. It's a brotherhood, a sisterhood. You're family," Chastain said. "You get to the point that they are literally your family and you don't want anything to happen to them."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
