A shot fired during a standoff with a wanted felon struck and killed an Iowa officer early Friday.
Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting was rushed to Stewart Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, according to The Messenger News.
About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a number of officers showed up at a house were they learned a wanted man may be. About 1:40 a.m., Buenting was struck by a single shot.
Corey Trott, 32, was taken into custody, and charged with murder.
Buenting, who was a full-time law enforcement officer with the Rockwell City Police Department for the past eight years, had been employed as a law enforcement officer since 1999.
Hee served as a member on a regional Special Emergency Response Team and was a certified firearms instructor on handgun, shotgun and rifle, through both the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and through the NRA Law Enforcement Division.
Buenting leaves behind a wife and two young children.
