A Eupora, Miss. police officer was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle during a high-speed pursuit.
Officer Keith Crenshaw deployed a spike strip on Highway 82 around 10 a.m. as a car carrying three robbery suspects approached, according to The Clarion Ledger.
Officials said that the suspects spotted the spike strip and veered into the median, where Crenshaw was standing.
The 52-year-old was fatally wounded in the collision. One suspect was killed and another was critically injured after the vehicle slammed into a light pole.
Eupora Mayor Dan Burchfield said he grew up with the officer and that he was a personal friend.
"I've known his family my whole life," he said. "He did a fine job, loved his job. He always went the extra mile. It didn't stop at what was necessary for him; he did everything the community needed."
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
Funeral arrangements for Officer Crenshaw are pending.
