Maryland Sheriff's K-9 Fatally Struck by Vehicle

Worcester County Sheriff's Office K-9 Ike was struck and killed by a car after jumping out of a cruiser.

A Worcester County, Md. Sheriff's Office dog died in the line of duty on Saturday.

K-9 Ike was struck by a car around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Race Track Road and Route 50 in West Ocean City, according to The Daily Times.

Cpl. Chris Larmore, the dog's handler, had pulled over a vehicle and left the dog in the parked police car. Ike then became "alerted" to something outside the car and jumped out of the window into traffic.

Lt. Edward Schreier said that the driver of an oncoming vehicle "did everything they could" to avoid the collision and stayed on the scene after fatally hitting Ike.

"The loss of this partner cannot be explained, and the hole it leaves in our agency is large," a Facebook page by the police department reads. "Our thoughts and prayers are with K-9 Ike's family and partner."

Ike, a three-year veteran of the department, received a police escort "with full honors" to Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury.
