June 11--STOCKTON -- Scott Hewell, one of the officers who was badly injured in a crash while responding to assist in an arrest of a shooting suspect on May 28, has died, police said this morning.
He was one of two officers in a car that crashed while responding to a shooting that occurred around 2 a.m. May 28. Jimmie Lee Turner had shot at two others, missing them but striking their car on West Lane near East March Lane.
The two officers injured were heading north on El Dorado Street to help apprehend Turner. Their vehicle struck a tree in the center median on North El Dorado Street near Jamestown Street. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate both officers from the patrol car.
Turner, a felon, is in San Joaquin County jail, facing various weapons charges, with bail of $2.75 million.
