Little River-Academy Police Chief Lee Dixon was killed while responding the scene of a disturbance.

The police chief in the small, rural Bell County town Little River-Academy was gunned down Thursday.

Lee Dixon was killed while responding the scene of a disturbance at a home near FM 436 and Allison Street, according to the Bell County Sheriff's Office.

At 5:11 p.m., a person came to the police department to report a disturbance. Dixon drove to the scene, letting dispatchers know that he was responding to a report of a man with a gun, Lt. Donnie Adams with the sheriff's office said.

Dixon initially said he did not need back up, but minutes later requested a second officer be sent to his location. Officials tried to call Dixon back on his dispatch radio. He did not answer and soon police began receiving several 911 calls of an officer shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:28 p.m.

The sheriff's office had a man in custody and deputies were questioning him Thursday evening. No charges have been filed, Adams said.

Dixon was retired from the Milam County Sheriff's Office. He had been chief of Little River-Academy's police department for about a month. The chief is the sole full-time officer of the department, Adams said.

Dixon also worked as a jailer in Bell County.
