A dashcam video shows the moments surrounding the drive-by shooting of an El Paso police officer in October during a traffic stop.
Officer Mike Garcia pulled over Horacio Castaneda at 1800 North Loop on Oct. 20 because his headlights were not turned on when the incident occurred, according to KFOX-TV.
As the officer returned to his cruiser, four shots were fired at him was another vehicle. Officials say that Frank Aparicio opened fire on Garcia before fleeing the scene.
Garcia then radioed in the message, "Shots fire, I got shot."
Seven weeks after the shooting, Castaneda recalled the incident and said that he vividly remembers everything that happened.
"I came back to reality when I heard the officer scream in pain," he told the news station. "Once I saw the officer fall down I went outside and other cars pulled over to help. They didn't really know what to do."
One driver offered their shirt to stop the bleeding, but it began to fill with blood. Castaneda took his own shirt off and tried to stop the bleeding.
Audio from the video shows officers initially believed that Castaneda's vehicle belonged to the suspect who fired the shots, but it was later determined that it was a drive-by shooting and Castaneda had gone to render aid to Garcia.
Aparicio was found dead a day later behind a business. Authorities said that the man had committed suicide and is also responsible for murdering Cecilia Diaz in a home in east El Paso.
Garcia is still recovering from his injuries and there's no word on when he will return back to work.
