Hancock County, Miss. Sheriff's officials are asking the public for leads and tips in the ambush of a deputy.

Chief Deputy Don Bass said it is vital that the public continue to provide help in solving the case that saw Deputy Todd Frazier narrowly escape death, thanks to his K-9 partner, according to The Sun Herald.

"The first couple of days, we had an unbelievable outpouring," Bass told the newspaper. "We need the public to keep the pace so we can catch the bad guys."

Officials say that Frazier was attacked from behind by two men on May 18 after he made a routine traffic stop on U.S. 90. According to investigators, the men then tried to drag the deputy to a wooded area, but he was able to use his remote release button on his belt to deploy K-9 Lucas from his cruiser, who attacked the men.

"They were going to dispose of him," Chief Investigator Glenn Grannan told the newspaper. "They were going to finish him."

The suspects fled in a Lincoln Towncar with a black vinyl top and large chrome rims. The vehicle had no tags, and the deputy's cruiser was not equipped with a dashboard camera.

Both Frazier and Lucas have not yet returned to work,

"They both deserve some time off to get back to 100 percent," Bass said. "There's no need to rush them back after something like that."
