A Chatham County, Georgia Sheriff's deputy was killed in a two-vehicle wreck while on duty Wednesday evening.
Deputy Richard Allen Hall was on his way home but technically still on duty around 5:15 p.m. when he attempted a U-turn on U.S. 280 and his patrol car was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck, according to The Savannah Morning News.
Hall was pronounced on the scene. The female driver of the pickup was taken to a local hospital and her injuries were not believed to be serious.
Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith said that it's not clear why Hall made the U-turn. He was in plainclothes and driving an unmarked cruiser at the time of the crash.
The 45-year-old deputy, who joined the department in 2001, was assigned to Internal Affairs and was on call 24/7.
"Obviously any time a fatality happens, it's an awful event. When it's one of your own, it makes it even a little more difficult to deal with," Chatham County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gena Bilbo told WTOC-TV. "So we're going to be dealing with this internally and try to help the family cope with their grief at this point."
The Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is currently conducting the investigation.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
