NORFOLK, Nebraska -- A Madison County Sheriff's deputy risked his life to save a trucker when he jumped into a moving tractor-trailer earlier this month.
Newly released dashcam video from the Dec. 2 incident shows Sgt. Todd Volk run across moving traffic on Highway 81 in Norfolk before climbing aboard the semi that wouldn't stop, according to KWBE-TV.
Volk told the news station that something sounded off as he overheard the radio traffic.
"Deputy Kruid said he got up beside (the semi), just to look at the driver, and see if he could get his attention better, and said he just had the blank stare on his face." he said. "As we got closer to Norfolk, the vehicle began to slow down and we were coming in on Highway 81 past the airport."
Before the rig could reach the city's biggest intersection, Volk knew something needed to be done.
"As he came by, I could see the driver’s head slumped down and felt he was not conscious and it popped in my head that we need to get this vehicle stopped," he said.
Volk was able to drive ahead of the semi, exit his vehicle and jump up into the cab to hit the breaks.
It was later discovered that the driver was having a diabetic reaction.
Madison County Sheriff Vern Hjorth commended Volk's action, saying that the deputy risked his life to save another.
