Special Agent Dies After Hit-and-Run Crash

Special Agent Scott McGuire, who was struck in a hit-and-run crash in South Florida earlier this month, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

MIAMI -- A federal agent hit by a motorist while getting into a taxi cab on South Beach has died.

Scott McGuire, an agent with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, died Monday from injuries suffered when a car plowed into him earlier this month on Collins Avenue at Espanola Way.

He leaves behind a wife and a young son.

Homeland Security issued a statement Monday: “Befitting his selfless nature, the special agent was an organ donor, and although we are immeasurably diminished by his death, we can at least take some small comfort in :knowing that his final act gave others the chance to live. ICE asks that you join us in keeping his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Back on Jan. 15 just past 2 a.m., Miami Beach police say, McGuire and another agent had just hailed a cab, which stopped to pick them up.

At that moment, a 2015 Mercedes E250 driven by Jordana Rosales was making a “wide U-turn” into the intersection, police said. Instead of stopping, she veered right, up onto the sidewalk and plowed into McGuire and the other agent, according to an arrest report.

Miami Beach police said Rosales — her windshield significantly damaged — took off south on Collins Avenue, never stopping. Her car was later found across the causeway in the Brickell area of Miami.

McGuire suffered devastating injuries and the other agent had a broken leg. The two were working at the time of the crash.

Rosales, 21, a Florida International University student from Coral Gables, is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury. With McGuire’s death, the charges will likely be upgraded.

Rosales is still being held in a Miami-Dade jail. She must post $100,000 bond before she can be released.
