Officials said that Clarksdale Police Cpl. Derrick Couch, who had to have one eye surgically removed, was questioning 19-year-old Johnny Robinson Jr. when he opened fire Saturday.

A Clarksdale, Mississippi police officer who was shot in the face by a suspect on Saturday has lost an eye.

Cpl. Derrick Couch had to have one eye surgically removed and a bullet remains lodged in his brain, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

The four-year veteran of the department is currently listed in critical condition at Regional Medical Center in Memphis and is on a ventilator.

Officials announced on Monday that 19-year-old Johnny Robinson Jr. was charged with one count of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer in the shooting of Couch.

He also was charged with two counts of armed robbery in two separate incidents at the Corner Grocery in Clarksdale.

His bail was set at $700,000 for all three charges.

Assistant Police Chief Robbie Linley told the newspaper that investigators believe Robinson acted alone in shooting Couch, who was questioning the suspect when the shots were fired.

Another suspect was taken in for questioning Sunday, but was cleared on Monday.

Couch has served with the Clarksdale Police Department since December 2011 and has been in the Community Police Division, Special Operations Division and Patrol Division. He previously worked for the Tunica County Sheriff's Office.

"He's a seasoned guy. He has been on the narcotics squad for a while, and he's just a good officer," Mayor Bill Luckett said.
