President Donald Trump Illuminates the White House in Blue to Honor L.E.
The White House was lit up in blue Monday night to honor law enforcement.
President Donald Trump announced the planned gesture earlier in the day during the signing of a proclamation declaring May 15 "Peace Officer Memorial Day" and the week "Police Week," according to The Washington Examiner.
"During Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, we honor the men and women of law enforcement who have been killed or disabled in the course of serving our communities," Trump said in the text of the proclamation. "Police officers are the thin blue line whose sacrifices protect and serve us every day, and we pledge to support them as they risk their lives to safeguard ours."
Trump visited the U.S. Capitol earlier Monday to pay tribute to fallen officers and gave remarks at an event held on the west lawn.
The President said during his speech that many lawmakers refuse to show support for law enforcement in the current.
“I will say it and I will talk about it proudly,” Trump said. "I will always support the incredible men and women of law enforcement as much as you have always supported me."
Following the deadly ambush attack on police officers in Dallas last July, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation asked President Barack Obama to light the White House in blue in honor of the five officers killed in the incident. While Obama ordered flags to be flown half-mast, he did not illuminate the iconic building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to be a strong supporter of law enforcement.
