DENVER --

A witness said he heard about 12 shots in five seconds during a shooting in Montrose late Saturday night that killed a police officer and injured two others.

Sheriff's deputies and police were called to a domestic dispute at 16915 64.50 Road around 8:30 p.m., said police Chief Tom Chinn.

Police started talking to the person who reported the incident. That's when a man who barricaded himself in a garage behind the home started shooting at police, Chinn said in a news release.

Officers Larry Witte and Rodney Ragsdale were injured and taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital. Sgt. David Kinterknecht, a 10-year veteran, was hit and killed, Chinn said.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported an officer could be heard on a police scanner desperately calling for backup and saying three people "were down."

Witte and Ragsdale were hospitalized after being shot in the legs. Chinn said both had surgery and were doing well.

The suspect was killed at the scene; Chinn said it had not yet been determined whether the man shot himself or was killed by police and sheriff's deputies.

Police have not released the man's name.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.

The shooting happened near the Cobble Creek Golf Course in a relatively affluent area of Montrose.

Montrose is about 260 miles from Denver in western Colorado.

Interment will follow at Cedar Cemetery.

Nearly everyday I read about the deaths or serious injuries sustained by officers throughout our country. Each and every time it sickens me. In September 2008, I narrowly escaped the same fate in an on-duty incident with a metally ill person. The injuries that day ended my career after nearly 25 years. I now have a permanent partial disability. I have always read officer.com and many other police publications and many times read the bad news. It upset me then and sickens me now, especially after being a victim of a similar ordeal. God has a special place in Heaven for those who do our job. It's a great place, but all these people will be missed here on earth too. Rest in peace and may the families of the fallen officers find peace also.

My deeply heartfelt sympathies go out to Sgt Kinnterknecht's family and loved ones. To Officers Larry Witte and Rodney Ragsdal, you survived! You are hurt but survived what all of us dread and prepare for.

I hope this doesn't sound hard or uncaring to any of those mentioned above, but, I am an FTO/PTO with 28 years on the street, and a deep caring and respect for law enforcement officers and law enforcement in general. PLEASE remember this, "Anything that can happen in the big cities, can happen in your jurisdiction too, just possibly with less frequency." That extra step in personal protection may just prevent the nightmare that happened in Montrose Colorado.

Stay safe....go home to your family....every day.
