ST. LOUIS, MO — Prosecutors charged an East St. Louis woman on Monday after police said her 8-year-old child was driving her car the wrong way on a downtown street while she was unconscious in the back seat alongside a 3-year-old who was not in a car seat.

Latonya Mayes-Gale, 28, is facing two counts of endangering the welfare of a child after police say she told her 8-year-old to drive the car because she couldn't.

Officers found them at Walnut and South 4th streets. The child was driving west in the eastbound lane, court documents say.

Mays-Gayle is being held in the St. Louis jail without bond.
