What a wast of money. That shows you how stat driving the Baltimore City Police Department is. We need tasers in patrol, not them damn phones........

Our entire 33 officer department has had Blackberry's for almost a year now. They are indispensible. They make a patrol officers job much easier.

Our department issues Blueberries to our officers. The officers are not too pleased either, they get very messy and mold quickly if not refrigerated. However they have proven invaluable, for instance last night a suspect was becoming confrontational and was about to resist arrest when Officer Jenkins offered him some blueberries. The suspect was so touched by the gesture he totally complied and went to jail with a yummy treat!

Does Baltimore PD Ride double unit or single officers in a car? If single that could be really dangerous trying to run plates and check warrants while driving.

In my dept (800 officers). every vehicle has an MCT (Dell Laptop) with full internet connectivity and the ability to run plates, licenses, warrants and much more along with e-citation/e-crash. I wouldn't want it any other way. If I'm out of the car on foot, which I try and do very often, I just call a squad mate to a tac channel on the radio and have them run info for me if needed.. or I can have one of our dispatchers run it as we have a channel just for that.

Our agency, (which is an investigative agency) issues blackberries. I really like the features of the phone. Our cases are sent by email and I can view them while I am driving. I also like the peer to peer (kind of like texting) feature which is interesting when we are interviewing a suspect. Another investigator and I text each other during the interview on questions we think we should ask or approaches we need to take. I really like it as a law enforcement tool.

TJ, if I'm not mistaken I believe Baltimore City has one officer to a car. In theory this is a great idea, but as Twin03 said, there are other things they could put that money towards. The departments biggest concern should be officer safety, then work efficiency.
