INDIANAPOLIS
--
Indianapolis Metro police Chief Michael Spears and Public Safety Director Scott Newman on Thursday announced a new set of "integrity safeguards" for the department.
The set of guidelines comes in the wake of the arrests of several officers in recent weeks.
Newman said officials won't hesitate to use the newly-implemented standards to make sure rogue officers are tossed out.
The new standards include more intensive supervision of officers in the field, tighter accounting and inventory controls of search warrants and seizures.
The guidelines also indicate bringing back polygraph tests for officers assigned to narcotics enforcement, vice squads, intelligence and the property room.
Performance evaluations and drug tests will also be conducted on a regular basis.
"Nothing can substitute for honest men and women who understand that their career as police is a sacred trust they hold for the public," Newman said. "We are ashamed of the actions of the few, but we are proud of the actions of the many."
Officials also plan to create a recruiting position in hopes of attracting high quality candidates and establishing an office of career development aimed at helping officers reach their professional goals.
