A D.C. police officer who came face-to-face with the Navy Yard gunman is on the road to recovery.
Officer Scott Williams has undergone several surgeries and needed to have a titanium rod implanted in his right leg after bullet shattered his femur, according to WJLA-TV.
He responded with other officers on Sept. 16 after Aaron Alexis fatally shot twelve people inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard. Alexis was gunned down by the officers.
Williams spent a month's stay at MedStar Washington, as well as three weeks at Walter Reed and anticipates at least one additional surgery.
On Saturday night, he spoke to the media for the first time during a fundraiser at Kelly's Irish Times in Northwest Washington hosted by the Renegade Pigs.
"I can say is thank you for the support. Thanks a lot," Williams told the news station.
The group is in the process of setting up a website that will allow the public to donate to Williams' recovery.
