Welcome to August and the so-called dog days of summer.

Sweltering temperatures might make patrols a slog, but agencies will need to get ready as festivals and cookouts give way to a new school year. Departments across the country to do an excellent job with school outreach, from school resource officers to DARE programs.

And make no mistake, these efforts earn dividends. Not only do they give kids an accurate look at policing and its role in a town, but they can also inspire the next generation of law enforcement officers.
