A Santa Monica man who charged at a deputy in Rancho Cucamonga with a knife after pinning him with his car was shot and killed on Saturday night, San Bernardino sheriff's officials said Sunday, Sept. 25.
Deputies were searching a Toyota Matrix in a parking lot in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Rochester Avenue around 7:15 p.m. after a retail theft in the 11800 block of Foothill Boulevard.
As they searched the Toyota, a Hyundai Elantra drove toward the deputies and pinned one deputy between the two cars, sheriff's officials said in a news release.
The driver of the Hyundai was identified as Marlon Bonds, 34, of Santa Monica.
After pinning the deputy, Bonds got out of the Hyundai and charged toward the deputies with a knife, authorities said. One or more deputies opened fire.
Bonds was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds and later died.
The deputy who was pinned was hospitalized for leg injuries and later released.
The investigation revealed no connection between Bonds and the initial theft, police said.
Two suspects in the theft were arrested, issued citations with a court appearance date and released at the scene, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said. The theft report will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office.
