Officer Down: Deputy Sheriff Michael Magil, with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (FL), was killed by a drunk driver on February 17, 2021. He was responding to call regarding an unresponsive individual in a vehicle. Deputy Sheriff Michael Magil, other deputies and rescue personnel were checking on the subject who had passed out in their vehicle. At the scene, paramedics broke the vehicle's window since the person was unresponsive. The subject woke up and accelerated at a high rate of speed. A sergeant on scene attempted to stop the man, but the subject drove recklessly and went into oncoming traffic.
Deputy Sheriff Magli was about to deploy spike strips when the subject lost control of the vehicle, overturned, and struck the deputy; he succumbed to his injuries. The subject was arrested.
Deputy Sheriff Magil is survived by his wife, two children, and parents. He was 30 years old.
