WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia -- An official at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail died after suffering a heart attack while on duty last week.
Major Angelanette Moore was on duty at the jail in Williamsburg when she died Thursday evening, according to the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily.
Officials said that Moore fell ill several hours following a shakedown in one of the housing units at the jail. As she was providing disciplinary guidance to inmates, she collapsed. Other officers and medical staff immediately began CPR but were unable to save her.
"Words cannot properly express what Team VPRJ is feeling today. We are all profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of Maj. Moore," said Col. Roy Witham, superintendent of Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with Maj. Moore’s family during this tragic time, and we will continue to provide them with assistance as they grieve her loss."
Moore served with the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail for 20 years and served as the agency's Director of Security.
She is survived by her husband and son.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
