DETROIT -- A Wayne County Sheriff's corporal who authorities said was brutally attacked Wednesday night by a 28-year-old jail inmate died while being treated at the hospital.
"It is with heartfelt sadness and deep regret," Undersheriff Daniel Pfannes announced, "that the Wayne County Sheriff's Office announces the passing of Cpl. Bryant Searcy."
Few details about the incident were released.
Searcy joined the force in 2002, and rose through the ranks, Pfannes added. His latest assignment was to the the jail at 525 Clinton St. in Detroit, where he was attacked.
The undersheriff said Searcy was assaulted at about 10 p.m. and "gravely injured." He was treated at the jail, and then rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he died.
The inmate who authorities said attacked him was not identified.
The attack is being investigated by the Detroit police's homicide unit, Pfannes said, adding that while funeral arrangements were not yet available, the corporal is survived by a wife and daughter, and "our prayers go out for them."
Memorial donations to help the family can be made online through the Officer Collin Rose Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing emotional and financial support to line-of-duty survivors.
