Cop-Killer Sentenced in Shooting Death of Off-Duty Pittsburgh Police Officer

PITTSBURGH -- Christian Bey, who was found guilty of murdering an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer in 2019, was sentenced to life without parole Monday morning.

Bey, 34, of Wilkinsburg was sentenced in the Court of Common Pleas after he was found guilty in April with first degree murder in the death of Officer Calvin Hall. He is also facing additional time in jail for various gun charges.

Hall was shot and killed July 14, 2019, while visiting friends at a home on Monticello Street in Homewood, where a block party was also happening. According to his relatives, Hall left when the party became rowdy because he didn't want to be involved. As he was leaving, an intoxicated woman sat down in the road and blocked his path, a criminal complaint filed in the case reads.

Hall tried to get the woman to move, at which point Bey began to argue with Hall. Hall was ultimately able to leave. He later returned, however, after his cousin called him to come back and help settle a dispute that broke out among some partygoers.

Officials at the time said that Hall returned and asked what was going on, which pulled him into the argument.

As Hall was talking to those involved in the dispute, Bey walked up behind him and started shooting, according to the complaint.

Hall died three days later.

Bey was charged with homicide and guns charges following the shooting.

The sentencing came after Bey's case had worked its way through the courts for months. In March, his first trial ended in a mistrial based on a witness's statements about Bey's criminal history. Before that, the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office withdrew its intention to seek the death penalty.
