Las Vegas Police Capture Convicted Bomber after Prison Escape

Profirio Duarte-Herrera, who was serving a life sentence for a 2007 fatal bombing at a Las Vegas hotel, used battery acid and a dummy to escape prison, according to the head of the corrections officers union.

The Luxor Hotel bomber Porfirio Duarte-Herrera has been captured by law enforcement in Las Vegas after escaping from state prison.

Duarte-Herrera, 42, had been unaccounted for since Friday from Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs.

He was arrested in the 1400 block of North Eastern Avenue, near East Owens Avenue, after police received information that a person matching Duarte-Herrera’s description was seen in the area, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

U.S. Marshal for Nevada Gary Schofield said Duarte-Herrera had purchased a ticket and was on his way to Mexico.

“He was en route to Mexico via a bus,” Schofield said late Wednesday night.

He said an observant employee called police, causing law enforcement units to respond.

Schofield credited the community and the media for assisting law enforcement in capturing Duarte-Herrera.

Two bus ticketing agencies are located in the 1400 block of North Eastern Avenue.

Nevada Department of Corrections notified the public that the convicted murderer had escaped on Tuesday.

Duarte-Herrera was serving a life sentence after he was convicted in 2010 of building and planting a pipe bomb atop a car in the Luxor parking garage, killing Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio, 27, a casino hot dog stand worker, in May 2007. Omar Rueda-Denvers, Duarte Herrera’s friend, was also convicted of murder in the bombing.

The bombing targeted Rueda-Denvers’ ex-girlfriend and her lover Antonio.

Federal authorities had offered up to $30,000 for information leading to the capture of Duarte-Herrera.
