7 Calif. Deputies at Jail Hospitalized after Exposure to Unknown Substance

Oct. 30, 2024
While searching the jail after an earlier "suspected overdose incident" that hospitalized seven inmates, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies suffered related symptoms.

Seven Los Angeles County deputies were rushed to the hospital after they were exposed to an unknown substance at the agency's Men's Central Jail, the second time in less than a day emergency crews responded to similar incidents at the facility.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the jail just before 3 p.m. after deputies were searching inmate housing after seven inmates inhaled or were exposed to an unknown substance in an earlier "suspected overdose incident," KTLA-TV reports. Six of the inmates were hospitalized in serious condition, and one inmate was in critical condition.

During the dorm search, seven deputies began experiencing symptoms possibly connected to the earlier call involving inmates. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution, and they were in stable condition.

A hazmat unit from the fire department had searched the jail to determine if there were continued exposure risks, but none were found.
