MERIDIAN, Miss. -- Four prison employees were stabbed Tuesday at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility after attempting to remove an inmate from a cell, Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said.
"As the team went in the offender produced a shank and injured four of the members," Sollie said.
The incident happened around 8:45 a.m.
Sollie said two of the workers were treated on site, while the other two were taken to a local hospital for treatment. None of the injuries were life threatening.
"When you are dealing with violent people who are serving life sentences, who feel they have nothing to lose, you are going to see things like this happen every now and then," Sollie said. "Hopefully we can use our tools and resources to prevent these incidents from injuring or causing harm to the staff."
Sollie said information the information law enforcement gathered will be presented to the next available Lauderdale County Grand Jury.
No charges have yet been filed but the inmate might face felony assault charges, Sollie said.
Three prison guards were injured in a similar stabbing on July 24 at the prison.
