Maryland Officer's Death Ruled a Suicide

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia ruled the death of Montgomery County Police Officer Thomas J. Bomba, who was shot on the top level of a parking garage in Silver Spring Monday, was a result of "self-inflicted injury."

SILVER SPRING, Maryland -- The death of the Montgomery County police officer who was fatally shot Monday has been determined to be a suicide.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia ruled that the death of Officer Thomas J. Bomba was a result of "self-inflicted injury," accoridng to WUSA-TV.

The 13-year veteran was found shot on the top level of a parking garage in Silver Spring and was transported to the Washington Hospital Center where he later died. 

Bomba was on patrol when he radioed at 8:49 a.m. to report that he was flagged down about disorderly subjects on the top level of the parking garage at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street. Officers were sent to assist, and the first arriving officer discovered Bomba suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officials said that the officer was wearing his body camera, but it was not activated. 

Acting Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones told reporters that Bomba was found just minutes after the shooting and the only weapon found at the scene belonged to the officer.

"This is a very difficult job, and this is one of those jobs where not everybody comes home when they go out in the morning," Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said. "It's a tough loss for everybody."

Bomba is survived by a wife and two children.
