Wounded Florida Sheriff's Deputy Returns to Duty

TITUSVILLE, Florida -- A Brevard County Sheriff's deputy who was shot and wounded last year returned to full duty on Wednesday. 

Deputy Paul Phillips was shot and severely injured after responding to a neighborhood disturbance where he was ambushed by the assailant who was armed with an AR-15 and a handgun on June 4, 2019, according to a new release.

Paul returned fire and eliminated the suspect, but was shot 3 times during the incident.

"Tonight I am extremely pleased and proud to welcome back to full duty Deputy Paul Phillips who was shot multiple times in the line of duty," Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a statement. "Not only is Paul an amazing member of our team but he is also a combat veteran having done 2 tours of duty in Iraq as part of the United States Army!!"

Officials said that from the moment the incident occurred, Phillips and his family were committed to him returning to full duty as a deputy with the agency and after repeated surgeries and rehabilitation is now back patrolling the streets.
