CHESTER, Pennsylvania -- A Chester City police officer died suddenly while on duty at the police station Saturday morning.

Officer Bronelle Barrett Lee became unresponsive inside the station around 7:16 a.m. when Crozer-Chester EMS was called, according to The Delaware County Times.

Chester City Police Commissioner Otis Blair told the newspaper that the 22-year veteran of the force was an outstanding officer and a work-a-holic.

"She'd give you the shirt off her back if that’s what it took, fed you if it was necessary,” Blair said. "Of the highest honors. Our condolences go out to our family, her loved ones. She would want us to keep moving forward. We still have a job to do. Pray for her family, that’s all I can ask.”

Barrett leaves behind four children. The cause of her death is still unknown.

“We are awaiting further confirmation from the Medical Examiner's office. She was on duty and was asked if she wanted to do a double shift," Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland told the news station. "The fact that when you lose one of your brother, sister comrades, it’s painful. The other stuff is out the window."

Officers from across Delaware County helped escort her body from Crozer-Chester Medical Center the nearly 8 miles to the Medical Examiner’s officer at the Fair Acres Geriatric Center in Middletown.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
