National TikTok School Shooting Threat Has Educators, Police on Alert

Dec. 16, 2021
Although threats in California and other states have lacked credibility, law enforcement agencies will continue to monitor the possibility of school violence Friday.

School district and law enforcement officials in the Sacramento area say they are are aware of and monitoring social media posts circulating nationwide threatening school shootings, but that there have not been reports of credible or direct threats to local campuses.

"This week we have learned of warnings being posted on TikTok about nationwide school shootings on Dec. 17," San Juan Unified School District principals said in emails to parents. "These posts are being shared across the country and to date, there is no information that these warnings are directed toward any San Juan Unified schools.

"Law enforcement is also aware of these posts, and the district's Safe Schools team will continue to monitor for any updates related to these rumors."

Elk Grove Unified and Sacramento City Unified sent similar messages to parents, with the latter saying it is "proactively communicating" with the Sacramento Police Department to ensure safety.

The Roseville Police Department says it is aware of the threats, which it also referred to as "rumors."

"As some of you may be aware, posts are circulating on TikTok, inferring schools nationwide are receiving threats of potential school shootings to occur on Friday, December 17," Roseville police said Wednesday in a Facebook post. "No Roseville school has received any direct threat. We're aware of the TikTok posts and are closely monitoring the rumors.

"If a direct threat occurs against a Roseville school, that school, staff, and families will be notified directly, and safety protocols would be enacted immediately."

A number of incidents involving threats or weapons on Sacramento-area campuses have been reported since the start of this school year. Earlier this month, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office arrested and cited a boy and girl, both 16-year-old students at Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove, following threats posted to Instagram.

Districts and police urge residents to report suspicious activity or direct threats to law enforcement.
