FOP Update: LE Officer Shootings, Ambush Attacks Keep Rising

Through June, 194 law enforcement officers have been shot in the line of duty, a roughly 9% increase from the same span in 2022, according to the National Fraternal of Police's monthly update.

Law enforcement officers shot in the line of duty, as well as ambush attacks on officers, have continued to rise so far this year, with a roughly 9% increase in shootings from the same span in 2022, the National Order of Fraternal Police reports.

Through June 2023, 194 officers have been shot in the line of duty, according to the FOP's monthly update. There were 178 officers shot during the same timeframe in 2022, an 8.9% increase. This year's total through June also is a 30% year-to-date increase from 2021 and 6% year-to-date increase from 2020.

Of the officers struck by gunfire this year, 25 were fatally shot, which is down from the same time last year. The first six months of 2022 saw 33 officers killed by gunfire.

Ambush-style attacks also saw an increase compared to the same period last year. Through June, there were 57 ambush attacks, with 66 officers being shot—11 fatally—in those incidents. During the same time span in 2022, there were 35 ambush attacks, with 57 officers being shot, 12 fatally.
