SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- A veteran San Antonio police officer died after his gun accidentally discharged Tuesday morning.

Officer William Kasberg, a 30-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department, was wounded in the tragic incident before active shooter training around 9:30 a.m., according to KENS-TV.

"This is a sad day for SAPD," Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. He told reporters that the officer was shot by his own firearm at the old Columbia Heights Elementary School, which ceased education operations last year. Kasberg and other officers were at the facility for state-mandated training called Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, or ALERRT.

According to McManus, when Kasberg was gathering his things, his pistol somehow discharged, and he was struck by the bullet. He said another officer heard what happened and found the veteran officer on the ground.

Kasberg was rushed to University Hospital, where he died.

Kasberg, who was set to retired, has been recognized for his work with San Antonio Police Department's DWI Unit. He has been honored by organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
