The State of Michigan and Michigan State Police (MSP) required assistance in the planning, programming, and evaluating options associated with consolidating the Grand Rapids Forensic Lab, 6th District Headquarters, and Rockford Post into a single location. The final accepted program statement looked at projected 2020 and 2030 staffing and programs that would be anticipated to occupy a new, modern law enforcement and forensic laboratory facility.
The first floor of the building presents a public side and an employee side in order to maintain site and building security. All evidence, suspect receiving, general deliveries, staff locker rooms, offices, break room, and post trooper functions are on the first floor along with the lab firearms, latent print units, and miscellaneous support spaces. All functions located on this level require direct grade level access.
The second floor houses the 6th District headquarters, trace, controlled substance and biology labs, offices, and support spaces.
This project plays an integral role in meeting the strategic goals established by MSP for the area served by the Grand Rapids Forensic Lab, 6th District Headquarters, and the Rockford Post. This project brings these units together into a single, modern law enforcement facility, thereby allowing MSP to realize administrative/staffing, operational, and functional efficiencies while decreasing the costs and administrative inefficiencies associated with maintaining and operating multiple dispersed aging facilities. The consolidation project will provide MSP the opportunity to better serve and provide leadership, innovation, facilitation, and program support in partnership with all the public and private organizations for the 2.2 million people currently directly served by these three MSP units, both now and through the foreseeable future.
