This facility received the LE Facilities III Silver award in the 2022 Officer Station Design Awards.
This unique shared municipal facility contains police (11k sf) and village hall program spaces (3.2k sf) along with a large (36%) percentage of shared training & meeting spaces for both staff and community members. The planning goal was to create secure separation between police and village hall staff spaces with controlled access point into each area.
In order to create multiple safe and secure access points to the shared meeting rooms for various groups, the design team located these spaces in the center of the building or at thresholds between public and staff areas to achieve these critical adjacencies and minimum cross overs of various users. In the two-story solution, most police functions occur on the lower level with all of the village hall functions occurring on the upper level. This split helps with the security separation between the two groups.
The topography of the site presented a challenge with about a 13’ slope from north down to the south. The design team used this as an opportunity to create a walk-out basement concept which informed a clear stacking diagram with all staff entering the lower level from the south (hidden from public view) while the public would all enter from the upper level facing the north. Since the short term booking & holding area is on the lower level, the design team used a creative exterior ramping system to achieve an ADA accessible route for public exiting the lower level bond out / property return door to get back to the public parking lot.
