Project Description:

The new public safety building is a four-story, 70,000 SF facility with an integrated multi-level parking garage. The site is in a heavy urban part of downtown Lafayette and is located at the gateway to the downtown district. Community engagement played a large role in the design of this facility. As such, the main police building is connected to the structured parking garage by a large, welcoming set of cascading stairs and a green space plaza between the parking garage and building for PD events, movies on the lawn, meetings, and public gatherings. There is a large community meeting room integrated in the police building that opens to the green-space plaza.

The lower level of the garage is secured for LPD staff only and also includes the vehicle sallyport, entrance to the holding areas, vehicle evidence processing bays and hazmat storage. The secured level of the garage has its own ingress and egress with access control and is monitored by the dispatch unit.

The main building includes components such as administration, patrol, dispatch, investigations, information technology, property and evidence, a real time crime center, Office of the Chief, kitchen / break area, K-9 unit, and multi-use training rooms. The facility also features cutting-edge technology, including a real-time crime center that brings in multiple video feeds from city cameras and police body cams as well as news and weather information to evaluate in the event of a major incident.

Consideration of the facility's long-term survivability and resiliency is integrated into every design aspect. Emergency power, including an additional "ship-to-shore" skid-mounted emergency generator, ensures the facility maintains power at all times. Specialized HVAC systems in critical areas such as the data center, property and evidence holding and processing laboratories, weapons cleaning, and ammunition storage are built to allow proper ventilation and air scrubbing.
