Project Description

Dewberry was awarded Programming, Design and Construction Administration services for a new Police Heliport building in Fairfax County.

The existing 9,500 square foot building was demolished, and the existing site was redeveloped to include a new 16,000 square foot building, a new concrete helipad and approach, parking and associated site improvements.

The project served a 24/7 mission of specialized staff and crew working in 12-hour shifts, including flight officers, pilots, paramedics and maintenance staff.

Functions included in the facility include office areas, a ready room, kitchen, storage, equipment rooms, locker rooms, a classroom/multipurpose room, a medical training room and two helicopter bays (maintenance and operations).

Dewberry worked closely with specialty disciplines, such as aviation and maintenance designers, to keep operations running efficiently and highly functional.

Through use of “Crime Prevention through Environmental Design” (CPTED) principles, the team was able to better understand building orientation; delineation of secure and public parking; site circulation, as well as identify durable materials appropriate for the building type.

The design also includes a meeting room accessible to the public but separated from the secure functions of the facility. Interior glazing provides visual connection between the public meeting room and the operations bay of the heliport.
