A 39-year-old Manchester man was arrested Sunday after firing multiple rounds in the parking lot of the Saline Police Department and City Hall, officials reported.
The incident occurred around 8:04 a.m. but Michigan State Police had responded to the man's home earlier that morning to investigate a call about him being suicidal, according to a post from Saline police on Facebook.
State police interviewed the man over the phone but he had already driven away from his home.
"Shortly after leaving his residence the subject arrived at our police station and called Metro-Dispatch informing the dispatch operator he was suicidal and wanted police to shoot him," Police Chief Marlene Radzik wrote on Facebook.
The man fired three rounds from a semi-automatic pistol, at least one of which was directed at the police station, the post said.
Saline police, along with officers from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Milan Police Department, Ann Arbor Police Department, Pittsfield Township Police Department and Michigan State Police, took the man into custody at 8:22 a.m.
He was unharmed and police confiscated two handguns, according to Saline police.
"This incident is still under investigation, and we are determining what charges will be submitted to our Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office. However, remember that this subject is being provided the help he needs," Radzik wrote. "This incident highlights the importance of mental health support and the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with individuals in crisis."
Washtenaw County residents with mental health questions can call the CARES team at (734) 544-3050 at any time or call and text 988 for the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
