The Virginia Sheriffs' Association is honoring a deputy who was critically wounded in a shooting earlier this year.
Scott Chambers, an investigator with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office, was named the 2023 Deputy Sheriff of the Year by the organization and will receive the award in September, WVEC-TV reports. Chambers was shot Jan. 11 while trying to serve an arrest warrant for a murder suspect.

The deputy was struck three times and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. After undergoing two surgeries, Chambers was released from the hospital after two weeks.
"He took on fire, he returned fire. It was just a heroic act," John Jones, the executive director of the state's sheriffs' association, told WVEC.
"I think it epitomizes what deputy sheriffs do every day," he added.
This isn't the first time this year Chambers has been honored for his actions in January. In March, Chambers was awarded the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office's Deputy of the Quarter honor, the Medal of Excellence, the Wounded in Combat Medal and the Sheriff’s Combat Cross Medal.
“Scott Chambers is a hero,” Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan told WVEC. “He puts on his badge every day to go out and get the worst of the worst off the streets.”
