An Oregon deputy has multiple surgeries as he continues to recover more than a week after he was shot multiple times while serving an eviction last month.
Gunfire struck Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Charles Dozé three times in the upper chest—bullets that were stopped by his body armor—and he was shot in both arms, breaking bones, the department stated in a social media update. He also lost his left eye and multiple teeth from two shots to his head and has a 6-inch wound down the right side of his head from a bullet that grazed him.
Dozé was shot July 26 while serving an eviction notice at a Tualatin apartment. An occupant inside opened fire through the door, and Dozé was struck as other deputies returned fire. The suspect was found dead in the apartment's bathroom, and it's unclear if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or the deputies' return fire.
"My dad was the first one in [the apartment], and immediately got shot," Kaela Dozé told KGW-TV. "How do you even prepare for that? My brother, my mom and I — we were able to see him. And he actually woke up for us after all of that anesthesia, getting his left eye removed, and all of his teeth."
Kaela Dozé said that one of the rounds went through the top of his head, behind his eye and then through the top of his mouth and the right side of his jaw.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created by the Washington County Police Officer Association, and it has raised over $290,000 as of Aug. 7.
"I am just incredibly happy that I get to see him and talk to him. I'm so grateful," said Kaela Dozé. "He's like, I can't wait until I get out of this bed and I can give you guys a hug! Because he feels so confined and he's an active person, so it's been difficult for him to rely on others to take care of him."
