The two officers were shot Thursday while responding to a family disturbance at a home in the 6200 block of Alta Puerta near Comanche Lookout Park.
The alleged shooter, identified as 40-year-old Jesus Prado, went to the home to pick up his children and became embroiled in an argument with his wife, Police Chief William McManus said.
Prado began to douse the home with gasoline and threatened to set it on fire with a torch he was holding, police said.
While one of the officers called for backup, Prado began to shoot at them with a long gun, police said. Prado then made his way to the home's second floor and started to fire at the officers from the window, police said.
Both officers were hit during the shooting. McManus said Prado emerged from the home and surrendered.
Prado has since been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and one count of deadly conduct with a firearm. His bail totals $3 million.
It was the 21st officer-involved shooting this year.
