For some people, it’s dating protocol to have a friend call you at a key time in order to have an easy out should this date be going awry.
This woman, though, appears to have a more, shall we say, extreme tactic.
The New York Post reports how 18-year-old Sumaya Thomas of North Liberty, Iowa, was getting ready to meet someone she had swiped right on a couple of weeks ago when she “got cold feet.”
According to the same New York Post article, Thomas — instead of simply canceling with your run-of-the-mill excuse — thought the best way to get out of the date was by calling the cops and claiming she was pregnant with the man’s child. It was because of this, she told them, that he was on his way to “hit, punch, kick and stab her” after sending her threatening messages.
Law & Crime continues to report how police confronted the man as he was leaving Thomas’s house, presumably after realizing their date wasn’t happening. It was then that the man informed cops how he had started speaking with Thomas just that week, verifying his claims with texts.
“The conversation showed he was being honest and really just meet this female,” concludes an affidavit concerning the incident.
“After a third interview with the above defendant [Thomas] she stopped lying and admitted to making these false reports because she got cold feet on meeting him and no longer wanted to,” the affidavit adds. “She advised she didn’t think officers would help she made up this call and the events that she described.”
Law & Crime confirms how Thomas ended up being the one booked — and later released — from the Johnson County Jail as a result of the call. She faces two misdemeanor charges of false reporting.
