Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units, LexisNexis® Recognize Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director for Service Excellence

Award Presented for Significant Contributions to the Criminal Intelligence Community

WASHINGTON, DC and ATLANTA (May 19, 2014) — LexisNexis® Risk Solutions, in conjunction with the Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU), today announced the winner of the annual LEIU Distinguished Service Award.  The award is presented to groups or individuals who have made a significant contribution to the law enforcement criminal intelligence community.

This year’s LEIU Distinguished Service Award recipient is Vernon Keenan, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), in recognition of his sustained contribution to LEIU and a continuous effort to enhance the criminal intelligence profession.  The award was presented during the annual LEIU conference in Atlanta, GA.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with LexisNexis in a joint effort to honor law enforcement’s best and brightest,” said Bob Morehouse, LEIU Executive Director.  “This award recognizes that Director Keenan has gone above and beyond the line of duty in his efforts to enhance both national and local criminal intelligence capabilities.”

Director Keenan entered law enforcement in 1972 as a uniformed police officer at the DeKalb County, Georgia Police Department.  In 1973, he became a GBI Special Agent and progressed through every available rank before his appointment as GBI Director in January 2003.  Following September 11, 2001, Director Keenan served on the committee that drafted the initial National Criminal Intelligence Sharing Plan.  Director Keenan serves on several national level working groups, including as Vice Chair of the Criminal Intelligence Coordinating Council, providing leadership and direction for the Privacy Committee.  His committee has drafted critical resource documents, including law enforcement guides to intelligence issues surrounding First Amendment events, social media and other important privacy and civil liberties issues.

“LexisNexis is proud to support LEIU and their annual awards program,” said Haywood J. Talcove, chief executive officer, Government, LexisNexis Risk Solutions.  “The support that the criminal intelligence professionals offer to the law enforcement community and to our society at large is a critical component in maintaining public safety.  LEIU provides added leadership and emphasis on creating and sustaining a modern professional law enforcement environment.”

LexisNexis partners with leading industry associations to recognize officers during major law enforcement events throughout the year, and presents the overall winner of their “One Step

Closer” award during the annual IACP conference in the fall.  The awards program is designed to honor leaders in federal, state and local government for excellence in the use of open or third-party information sources to bring government cases, problems or investigations “one step closer” to resolution.
